Blackout in Shiloh!

Other headlines

Shiloh (UNN) - Gilboa's capital was plunged into darkness when a failure of the power grid shut off all electricity in Shiloh. Despite concerns that the blackout would lead to panic, the city was largely calm as residents poured out into the streets in a sign of solidarity with their neighbors.

"I was afraid at first when the lights went out, but when I saw that everyone was relaxed and supportive, I was able to breathe easier," said Amanda Cornish, an interior designer who spent the night with friends out in the streets as part of an ad hoc "block party."

The main Shiloh power grid suffered a systematic failure at approximately 8:02 PM, according to Minister of Energy Howard Raines. The "system glitch," as Minister Raines described it, cut off all electricity moments after the start of a fireworks display in honor of King Silas Benjamin's birthday.

As startled residents left their darkened homes and offices to come out into the street, the Ministry of Energy enacted emergency protocols to restore power to the city.

"We put every engineer and technician in the city on it," Minister Raines said. "Not just government employees, but people in the private sector as well. CrossGen was particularly helpful in lending us their best technical advisors."

The technicians were ultimately able to trace the problem to a switchboard failure at a manufacturing plant at New Carmel, according to Chancellor Marcus Hanson. Repair teams were dispatched and power was restored at 2:12 AM.

Once electricity flowed through the system again, most residents returned indoors, although some stayed until morning enjoying the spirit of camaraderie that had developed over the hours of darkness.

"It was a special night," said Ross Martin, a musician who entertained a crowd gathered at 73rd street and Monarch Avenue with a spontaneous guitar performance. "It took something like a blackout to bring the community together. Hopefully people will appreciate each other more after this experience."

Some residents expressed concern that the blackout might have been an attack, possibly by Gath, which has waged years of war with Gilboa and has only recently signed a peace treaty. But Unity Hall was quick to deny such speculation.

"This was an accidental power failure and nothing more," said Chancellor Hanson. "We remain on good terms with our neighbors in Gath and reject any effort to poison the new peace with conspiracy theories."

The blackout has caused the Ministry of Energy to re-evaluate its emergency protocols, and the King has ordered the development of a backup electrical system to prevent future outages, according to Minister Raines.
